Vietnamese Fruits Aim to Expand Market Share in Singapore

A series of vibrant activities, such as the Vietnamese Goods Week program, business networking opportunities, and lychee tasting events, have recently taken place in Vietnam, according to VietnamPlus. These activities were met with enthusiasm by the local population and have served to further strengthen the island nation’s economy.

Further support from the office is also available for any Vietnamese localities and enterprises with the intention to export fresh lychee and longan to the market.

According to Singaporean business administration figures, Singapore imported fresh lychee and longan last year, spending SGD 6.78 million (US $5.02 million) and SGD 4.6 million, respectively. Of these amounts, shipments from Vietnam amounted to SGD 43,000 and SGD 4,000 for each fruit.

Vietnam’s lychee and longan have proved their worth by entering many demanding markets, such as Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Australia. With their superior quality, well-known brand, and great potential, they have plenty of opportunities to establish a presence in Singapore.

In late May, the Ministry of Industry and Trade convened a meeting with Vietnam Trade Offices abroad to discuss ways to bolster the exports of lychee and longan as many northern localities are harvesting the fruits, according to VOV.

Speaking at the event, Director of the Bac Giang Provincial Department of Industry and Trade, Tran Quang Tan, estimated that the province’s total lychee production will reach a record of 180,000 tonnes this year. The harvesting period has been scheduled to run from May 25th to July 30th.

Apart from the traditional market of China, its promising markets extend beyond its borders to the United States, the European Union, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, the Middle East, Thailand, and Hong Kong (China). These countries represent a broad array of potential opportunities for Chinese businesses to explore, offering a variety of incentives and advantages.

Director of the Hai Duong Provincial Department of Industry and Trade, Tran Van Hao, has informed that the province is currently home to nearly 9,000 hectares of lychees and is predicted to yield a total of 61,000 tonnes this year. Of these, 31,000 tonnes are expected to be early-ripening lychees.

The Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Do Thang Hai, has asked relevant units to regularly monitor and update the situation of farm produce, such as lychee and longan, and their demand in international markets.

The Vietnam Trade Offices abroad were tasked with carefully monitoring the market trends, trade regulations, and export requirements for key products, providing timely counsel to the ministry’s top brass to assist localities, organizations, and businesses. With this information at hand, the ministry could take appropriate steps to ensure a successful trade outcome.

The Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade) must ramp up policy research and forecasting to offer comprehensive support to businesses engaged in trade promotion and export-import activities, he said.

As many as 5,400 tonnes of fresh lychees have been exported to China via Lao Cai province’s Kim Thanh II international border gate since the start of the harvest season, according to Pham Van Phuc, the deputy head of the Customs Office at Lao Cai International Border Gate, as reported by Nhan dan (People) newspaper.

The Lao Cai Economic Zone Management Board has reported that approximately 29,000 tonnes of lychee from Hai Duong and Bac Giang provinces are expected to be exported to China in 2020.

The volume of exported fruit is set to rise in the upcoming days as lychee enters its main season. It is estimated that from June 10, around 50-70 trucks of lychee fruit will pass through the Lao Cai border gate to China every day.
