As the two countries entered into the 10th year of the Strategic Partnership in 2023, Viet Nam and Thailand should look toward taking on a more proactive role in shaping the new and emerging international system. Through coalition-building and agenda-setting, Viet Nam and Thailand can increase the countries’ leverage and strategic position, as well as that of sub-regional and regional groupings like ACMECS, ASEAN, and APEC.

Most recently, Thailand hosted the 2022 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Bangkok, during 14 – 19 November, an event that demonstrated even closer cooperation between Viet Nam and Thailand. Not only did President Nguyen Xuan Phuc attend the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, but he also made a four-day official visit to Thailand, by invitation of the Thai Prime Minister. The Vietnamese side supported Thailand as Chair to achieve consensus on the APEC Leaders’ Declaration, the APEC Ministerial Joint Statement, and the Bangkok Goals on Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy.

The bilateral outcomes of the visit ranged from the Plan of Action for the Viet Nam – Thailand Strengthened Strategic Partnership for 2022 – 2027, the establishment of Sister City relations between Thai and Vietnamese provinces, to Memorandums of Understanding between our financial institutions and between our Chambers of Commerce.

Such substantive and positive deliverables point to the multi-layered friendship that Viet Nam and Thailand enjoy and will continue to build on. Together, the two countries shall work to ensure a more prosperous and sustainable future for our countries and peoples, as well as contribute strategically to the geopolitical balance at the regional level and on the global stage.

Besides, at the event, there are two main exhibitions. One is “Phuket Corner” to promote Thailand’s candidacy for the specialised expo in 2028. As an active member of the global community with strong determination to advocate for sustainability, Thailand applies as a candidate to host the specialised expo in 2028 under the theme “Future of Life: Living in Harmony, Sharing prosperity” in Phuket.

Phuket Expo will be focused on 3Ps: People, Planet and Prosperity. These 3Ps are three deeply-intertwined factors to build a sustainable future for humankind. The goal is to promote integration between innovation and wisdom, balance between growth and environmental-friendly consumption as well as to make Phuket known not only as a dream destination for beach paradise but also as a world-class health and wellness hub for all.
